PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

DEGREE OFFERED:

Master of Science in Bioinformatics

The program prepares students for a multidisciplinary career in the biomedical sciences using mathematics, statistics, and computer science.  It is designed to provide students quantitative tools for analyzing data and problems associated with molecular, cellular, physiological, and particularly, genetic systems.

Students may select courses from a list of approved courses offered by the following departments at Marquette:  Mathematics, Statistics, and Computer Science; Biology; Biomedical Engineering; and Electrical and Computer Engineering.  In addition, courses are offered by the Department of Physiology, Bioinformatics, and the Division of Biostatistics at the Medical College of Wisconsin.   A set of core bioinformatics courses are also required.

Students may pursue the degree on a full-time or part-time basis. Many courses are offered in the evening or on weekends. This program is managed by the Bioinformatics Co-Directors working with a committee composed of faculty from the Medical College of Wisconsin and Marquette University. This committee is responsible for admitting students to the program, establishing degree requirements and coordinating course offerings.

Students will receive theory and technique classroom training in such areas as physiological genetics, genomic analysis, artificial intelligence, and digital image processing and analysis.  The program will also provide the opportunity for students to apply what they learn in a research setting.

Each student is assigned an academic advisor and a program mentor to enhance his or her experience.

OF INTEREST TO:

  • Recent mathematics, statistics, computer scientists, biomedical scientists or engineering graduates seeking the professional enhancement of a part-time or full-time master's degree program in bioinformatics.
  • Recent graduates in other fields who are seeking a part-time or full-time master's degree program in bioinformatics.
  • Mid-career professionals with work experience in computing or other technical/scientific fields, seeking part-time graduate work for career advancement or to change careers.

Students are admitted to the program through Marquette University Graduate School. Courses taken for credit in this program must be from the list of approved courses published in the "Master of Science in Bioinformatics Handbook" which contains a list of the currently approved courses for the degree; and it also includes scheduled course offerings for the next semester. Any variations must be approved by the Bioinformatics Graduate Committee.
